Frank told me to do it.

Initial Fascination

Donnie Darko(2001) is a film directed by Richard Kelly, released in 2001. It is in no way a perfect film but it is still one of my favourite sci-fi movies.  I watched it first in high school when my obsession with Jake Gyllenhaal was at its peak. But it wasn't just Jake Gyllenhaal's presence that captivated me; it was the edgy posters and the cinematography of this film that drew me in.

Soundtrack

One of the many standout features of Donnie Darko is its soundtrack, featuring songs from the 1980s. The juxtaposition of upbeat pop songs with dark, atmospheric scenes creates a unique and unsettling contrast, adding depth to its narrative.

Who is Donnie?

The movie follows a troubled and angsty teenager named Donnie Darko, played by young Jake Gyllenhaal. It is a coming of age story. After experiencing a near death incident, Donnie finds himself to be plagued by bizarre visions and time travel scenarios.

The film opens with a mysterious and eerie visual, characterised by a muted and melancholic colour palette; setting the tone for the story, indicating to its viewers that Donnie is not an ordinary teenager. He is illustrated as an outsider, emphasised by his interactions with his family and his classmates and teachers. The movie takes a closer look into his psychological struggles through his therapy sessions with Dr. Thurman (Katherine Ross), revealing his apparent hallucinations and existential angst.

Plot

The plot revolves around Donnie’s interactions with Frank, a man in a large bunny suit. Frank informs Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. This moment sets off a series of events leading to Donnie finally understanding his role in the universe. This movie delves into the concepts of alternative universes, isolation, despair and sacrifice.

Conclusion

I don't think I have myself understood this film fully. It is very confusing, consisting of many weird concepts and spotting new details with every watch is not uncommon. It has a complicated plot and enigmatic ending alongside its uncanny cinematography makes this film not only striking but also thought provoking. It is a film which defies the rules of categorization and allows its viewers to explore their own imagination and understanding, alongside perfectly capturing a teens average summer experience.
